REGISTERING DEFLATE AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
==============================================
Deflate is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
following.
7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.
See the documentation which should accompany this file for
more information on the 7.0 PLUS Utilities. A registration form should
also accompany this file. Please use it to register the software.
USING DEFLATE
==============
• If you use Deflate, please please please send me a note. My addresses
(post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
information in the above section on registration.
What Does Deflate Do?
--------------------
• Deflate, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Box) that can also be used with System
6.0.X, removes help resources from any file. It can be set to delete just the
help resources, or the resources and the data that they indicate. So you
can free up all that space help was taking up.
Using Deflate
------------
• Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
style”. Deflate will scan folders and disks provided, and will
modify all files no matter what their depth. Drop Boxes require Apple
Events, and thus System 7.0 or higher.
• You can also double-click on the application and select files to Deflate
through a standard open file dialog. In this way, Deflate is compatible with
System 6.0.X. Double-clicking also gives you access to the Preferences and
About dialogs.
• If you drop an alias directly into Deflate (not inside a directory), the Finder
will resolve it and Deflate will think that you’re dropping in the target
(parent) file, folder, or disk.
• PLEASE see “Help Resources,” below, to see what Deflate can do
(good and bad).
• ALWAYS WORK ON A COPY. Nuff said.
• Alerts are very annoying, especially in Drop Boxes. So there aren’t any. As
a rule of thumb: if it doesn't work, there must have been an error.
• To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Portions of files already
processed will remain modified.
Preferences
-----------
• The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don’t want to see that
window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything. The
preferences apply ONLY to Drop Box mode. They are not consulted when in
Manual mode.
• The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
alert before modifying anything. You can also select what resources you
wish to delete. See the section, “Help Resources,” below, to determine what
resources you should delete.
• To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
option key while the program is launching.
• To bypass the show alert preference (and therefore not show the alert),
hold down the shift key while the program is launching (or when hitting
the OK button if you show the preferences button by holding down option).
Help Resources
--------------
• Help resources indicate what data resources (strings, pictures, text) should
be used in a help balloon for a given item. Choosing to delete only the help
resources leaves these data resources intact. Thus, if a program depends on,
say, a string list resource for all its error messages AND help messages (it
really shouldn’t, but it happens), the string list (and all other data resources)
should be left behind.
• Associated (or data) resources (see above for description) can be removed if
you know that they are not otherwise required by the target program. Obvious
problems arise if a required error message was encoded within a help string
list that you deleted when you Deflated the program.
• Programs don’t usually encode error (or other) messages with help messages,
or use a text resource for both a help message and an alert message, so you
can probably assume that in most cases you are safe deleting all the help
and associated resources. But remember to work on a COPY. In fact, ALWAYS
keep a copy of all modified software. I’m sure you’ve heard this before.
USING DROP BOXES
=================
Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
and thus their target (parent) is modified.
